spain-topographic-map-print-b0-landscape
Spain Topographic Relief Map | B0 Landscape Print (1456 x 1030 mm)

The Meseta plateau, the Pyrenees, the Sierra Nevada, the Ebro. Spain's food, its wine and its languages all grew out of this relief. We built a topographic map of the entire country from raw satellite elevation data and printed it at B0 landscape, 1456 x 1030 mm. This is the edition for a wall that runs wide rather than tall: above a bar counter, behind a row of banquettes, over a bottle shelf, above the whiteboard in a classroom. Hang it and it takes over the room. Step closer and you can follow a single minor tributary.

Landscape puts Spain in its neighbourhood

Set the Iberian peninsula on a wide sheet and room opens up around it. France beyond the Pyrenees, Portugal to the west, the Balearics out in the Mediterranean, and Morocco across the strait all sit on the same piece of paper. When the conversation turns to where Spain actually is, that surrounding space does the work for you.

The layout was rebuilt for the wide format rather than rotated. The bilingual geography panel sits top left, the title block top right, the four landform indexes run down the left margin, the Canary Islands inset sits bottom left and the legend bottom right. Everything you read is gathered on the left, so the eye moves left to right, from index to map.

Built from satellite elevation data

The base is 30 m resolution elevation data from Europe's Copernicus programme. This is not an existing map that has been retouched. Colour and hillshading were computed from the raw elevation model, and every river was traced reach by reach, from source to mouth, out of a global hydrographic database. A hypsometric palette running from green lowlands to brown highlands is layered with obliquely lit shading, so the terrain lifts off a flat sheet.

The projection is ETRS89 Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area (EPSG:3035), the European standard. Because area is preserved, you can compare one region against another by eye and trust what you see.

Same scale, same detail as the portrait edition

The scale is roughly 1:1,140,000, so 100 km measures about 88 mm on the sheet. Only the orientation changes; the map itself is identical to the portrait edition. Not only the great trunk rivers but their tributaries and the small watercourses too: the Ebro and the Guadalquivir of course, but also rivers such as the Jiloca and the Alberche that disappear from ordinary maps.

Sixty-nine landforms are numbered in total: 60 mountain ranges, plateaus, plains, depressions and rivers on the main map, plus 9 in the Canary Islands inset. All of them are listed in a bilingual Spanish and Japanese index. Match a number to the index and you reach the name without needing to read Spanish. The 17 autonomous communities are labelled in both Spanish and Japanese as well. The Balearic Islands sit inside the main frame; the Canary Islands appear in an inset at the same scale, with each island's volcanic relief intact.

Data precision and print resolution are matched, so the sheet reads as a single image from across the room and as a working map up close. None of the soft edges or banding you get from an upscaled picture.

A map for talking about wine

When you explain Spanish wine, terrain is the strongest tool you have. Why are the vines of Ribera del Duero exposed to such violent day to night temperature swings? Why do the whites of Rias Baixas carry a saline edge? Why do the vineyards of Priorat cling to those slopes? Every answer sits in elevation, in the position of the mountains, in the distance from the sea.

What a list of appellation names cannot convey, a relief map conveys instantly. You can point and say "here". Showing the land itself is the fastest explanation, and the one people remember. If you would like to taste the regions you have just found on the map, our Spanish wine selection is the place to start.

For the wall that runs wide

Every venue has a stretch of wall that will not take anything tall but runs on horizontally. Above the counter, behind the banquettes, over the bottle shelf, above the blackboard. This edition was made to fill exactly that band with a single sheet. At 1456 mm across it covers about the width of one table for four.

The muted earth palette sits well against wood, white plaster, brick or tile, and it never competes with the colour of the food or the wine. It also earns its place as a conversation starter. A guest at the counter looks straight up at the map, hunts for a region, asks a question. That exchange closes the distance between your venue and the person in front of you.

For a wall that runs tall instead, by an entrance, between two windows or beside a column, the same map is available as the B0 portrait print (1030 x 1456 mm). Same content, same scale, only the orientation differs.

How it was made

This map is an original work produced in house by Daniel's Wine Club. Open elevation and hydrographic data were acquired and then every stage was built from the ground up: reprojection, hillshade computation, river tracing and the placement of every label. Colours stay rich, and the result feels refined and quiet. Because it barely catches the light, the labels stay readable even on a lit wall.

Heavyweight matte coated paper with matte lamination
The same stock with a matte film laminated over the surface. The matte character is unchanged, but resistance to moisture, fingerprints, scuffing and UV fading improves considerably. If the map will hang within arm's reach, directly above a counter for instance, this is the one to choose.

Delivery

Each print is made to order. The content, the scale and the number of landforms are identical. For a wall that runs wide, above a counter, behind banquettes or over a blackboard, take this landscape edition. For a tall narrow space, by an entrance, between two windows or beside a column, take the portrait edition.

Is a frame included?

No. You receive the print only; no frame is supplied. Some of the product photographs show the map framed and hung in a room, but that is for reference. Poster hangers, magnetic rails or mounting to a panel all look excellent. If you would like a frame for a B0 landscape sheet, a local framer can advise you.

Will it fit above a bar counter or a row of banquettes?

That is exactly the wall this orientation was made for. At 1456 mm across it covers roughly the width of one table for four. If it will hang low enough for people to touch, choose the laminated finish.

Can it be used as teaching material in a wine school?

Yes. With 69 numbered landforms and a bilingual index, you can point to a number during a class. A landscape sheet also hangs more easily above a blackboard or a screen, and stays legible from every seat in the room.

Are the wine appellation (D.O.) boundaries drawn on it?

No. This map is dedicated to terrain, so D.O. and D.O.Ca. boundaries are not shown. It is not a map of the appellations themselves; it is a map for explaining why the appellations are where they are.

What is the difference between the two options?

The paper is the same heavyweight matte coated stock in both. The higher option adds a matte laminate film over the surface. The look and feel barely change, but resistance to moisture, fingerprints, scuffing and fading increases substantially.

How long does delivery take?

Because each print is made to order, we ship in about 7 to 10 business days.
