Spain's food, its wine and its languages all grew out of this relief. We built a topographic map of the entire country from raw satellite elevation data and printed it at B0 (1000 x 1414 mm). Hang it and it takes over the wall. Step closer and you can follow a single minor tributary. It works as decoration and as a reference at the same time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eBuilt from satellite elevation data\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe base is 30 m resolution elevation data from Europe's Copernicus programme. This is not an existing map that has been retouched. Colour and hillshading were computed from the raw elevation model, and every river was traced reach by reach, from source to mouth, out of a global hydrographic database. A hypsometric palette running from green lowlands to brown highlands is layered with obliquely lit shading, so the terrain lifts off a flat sheet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe projection is ETRS89 Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area (EPSG:3035), the European standard. Because area is preserved, you can compare one region against another by eye and trust what you see.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eNot just large. Resolved edge to edge.\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe scale is roughly 1:1,140,000, so 100 km measures about 88 mm on the sheet. B0 is what makes the detail possible: not only the great trunk rivers but their tributaries and the small watercourses too. The Ebro and the Guadalquivir of course, but also rivers such as the Jiloca and the Alberche that disappear from ordinary maps.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSixty landforms, mountain ranges, plateaus, plains and rivers, are numbered on the map, with a bilingual Spanish and Japanese index set in the margin. Match a number to the index and you reach the name without needing to read Spanish. The Balearic Islands sit inside the main frame; the Canary Islands appear in an inset at the same scale, with each island's volcanic relief intact.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eData precision and print resolution are matched, so the sheet reads as a single image from across the room and as a working map up close. None of the soft edges or banding you get from an upscaled picture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eA map for talking about wine\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen you explain Spanish wine, terrain is the strongest tool you have. Why are the vines of Ribera del Duero exposed to such violent day to night temperature swings? Why do the whites of Rias Baixas carry a saline edge? Why do the vineyards of Priorat cling to those slopes? Every answer sits in elevation, in the position of the mountains, in the distance from the sea.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat a list of appellation names cannot convey, a relief map conveys instantly. You can point and say \"here\".
