Numbers 1 to 106 are DOP, 107 to 149 are IGP. Each community's list of appellations sits right beside that community on the sheet, so you look at the region and read its names in the same glance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNames appear in Spanish exactly as they are registered, accents included. They are the spellings you will meet on a label and on an exam paper. The 17 autonomous communities are labelled in both Spanish and Japanese.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eThe boundaries come from the law\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSpanish law defines the extent of a GI as a list of municipalities. To be faithful to that definition, we first drew all \u003cstrong\u003e8,042 municipal boundaries\u003c\/strong\u003e in Spain, then assembled every appellation from its own list of municipalities. Nothing here was traced from another map or rounded off by eye. Each boundary line answers to a line of text in the register.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe result keeps the awkwardness of the real thing: appellations that run one municipality deep along a river, areas that are not contiguous, areas that reach across into a neighbouring community. Difficult shapes to draw, but they are the true ones.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eThe overlaps are all here\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSpanish GIs are layered. DO Catalunya swallows almost every other DO in the region, VdlT Castilla y Leon covers the whole community, and DO Cava is a scattered set of municipalities across several communities. Most maps leave these out because they are hard to render.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis one does not. Deep colour marks each DOP, pale colour each IGP. Where a large DOP lies underneath, its perimeter is drawn as a red dashed line; IGP perimeters are blue dashed. Cava, which behaves differently from everything else, carries its own heavy green outline and circled numbers. The practical truth that a given vineyard is DO Penedes and DO Catalunya and DO Cava all at once can be read off a single sheet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eBuilt for exam study\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was designed for anyone learning appellations systematically: WSET at every level, the Japan Sommelier Association qualifications, and wine school courses generally.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLists and flashcards do not fix the relationships between names. What you learn as a position stays put. Rioja, then Ribera del Duero to its west, then Toro and Rueda beyond that, then Arribes out on the Portuguese border. That kind of knowledge survives the exam room and transfers to questions you did not revise.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe landscape format is the classroom format. It hangs above a blackboard or a screen without eating height, and it reads the same from the front row and the back. Spain is a wide country, so the landscape sheet suits it: more of the paper goes to the map itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe muted palette sits comfortably against wood, white plaster, brick or tile, and never competes with the colour of the food or the wine. It also starts conversations. A guest sits down, studies the map, finds the region their glass came from, and notices an unfamiliar name beside it. \"What is that one like?\" is how the second glass gets ordered. Nobody has to come out of the kitchen to explain a region. Find Ribera del Duero on the appellation map, then confirm on the relief map that it sits on a plateau at 800 metres. Find Rias Baixas, then look at the drowned river valleys opening to the Atlantic.
