The grape

Aligote, a white grape variety from France, is relatively obscure in the global wine market, and its charms are not widely known. However, it produces excellent wines. Aligote is commonly cultivated in Romania, with 5,065 hectares as of 2023.

It is the most representative white grape variety of the Dobrogea region, with 854 hectares as of 2023. At Daniel’s Wine Club, we highly recommend any Aligote wine from this region. It is really worth a try.

Tasting notes

  • Appearance
A healthy, bright medium lemon color.
  • Nose
It has a fresh and rich aroma, reminiscent of wildflowers, elderflower, acacia, and chamomile, with nuances of citrus fruits (lemon, grapefruit), green apple, white peach, and pear, showcasing wonderful complexity. You can also detect a slight mineral sensation derived from limestone soils (wet stones, flint).
  • Palate
It carries nuances of green apple, citrus fruits, and hay. The balance between the fresh, lively acidity and moderate fruitiness is beautifully achieved. With its rounded and gentle flavor profile, it boasts a wonderful mineral sensation that underpins its structure. Despite its dry taste profile, it leaves a subtle sweetness derived from the fruit, enticing the appetite. The finish is elegant and long, with hints of chicory.
  • Food pairing
Aligoté pairs perfectly with fish and seafood dishes, especially herb-roasted white fish. In addition to fish, it complements dishes such as nanbanzuke, caponata, grilled chicken, salads with yogurt dressing, and fresh cheeses. It also pairs wonderfully with a wide range of Japanese cuisine, from sushi to tenpura.
