Aligoté
Romania’s Best-Kept Secret
Discover Aligoté: Crisp, Versatile, and Perfect with Japanese Cuisine
Aligoté is a distinctive white grape variety that, despite its relatively low international profile, holds remarkable potential for producing exceptional wines.
Aligoté originates from Burgundy, France, and was created by crossing Pinot Noir and Gouais Blanc. Today, it is grown in countries beyond France, including Ukraine, Romania, Moldova, Bulgaria, and Switzerland, where it is particularly popular in Eastern Europe.
Aligoté wines are celebrated for their bright citrus aromas, delicate flavors, and lively acidity, making them exceptionally food-friendly and versatile companions to many dishes.
Interestingly, Romania has quietly emerged as a thriving second home for Aligoté, cultivating an impressive 5,065 hectares as of 2023, according to data from ONVPV.
Romanian Aligoté wines have garnered unexpected popularity, cherished for their vibrant fruit notes and surprisingly rich character. Many examples even showcase impressive potential for long-term aging.
Romanian Aligoté pairs beautifully with fish and seafood dishes, making it especially appealing to wine enthusiasts in Japan. It harmonizes wonderfully with white fish dishes, including sashimi and salted grilled fish, as well as tempura, fried chicken, prosciutto, pork shoulder, and flavorful preparations such as acqua pazza.
