Romania is a country in Eastern Europe bordering Hungary, Ukraine, Moldova, Bulgaria, Serbia and the Black Sea. Blessed with wide national roads and a rich natural environment, Romania is the largest wine-producing country in Eastern Europe. The land area is 238,391 square kilometers.

Romania has over 80,000 grape producers, accounting for one-third of the EU.
According to OIV data for 2019, the vineyard area is 191,181 hectares and 230 grape varieties are grown.
45 EU recognized geographical indications (DOC and IG) are registered.
There are 17 EU approved master's and doctoral degrees related to viticulture and wine production in Romania.
Annual wine production is 3,808,000 liters (= 380.8 million liters). About 94% of wine production is consumed domestically and about 6% is exported. The annual consumption per capita is 23.9 liters (calculation for people aged 15 and over).
