Negru de Drăgășani

Negru de Drăgășani is a relatively recent red grape variety, developed at SCDVV Drăgășani (the Research and Development Institute for Viticulture and Winemaking Drăgășani) through the crossbreeding of two varieties: Negru Vârtos, a native Romanian grape, and Saperavi, a variety originating from Georgia.

According to data provided by ONVPV (National Office for Vine and Viticultural Products) for the year 2023, Negru de Drăgășani covers a total area of 67.92 hectares, ranking 39th among the grape varieties cultivated in Romania. The largest vineyard area is in the Drăgășani subregion, with 23.81 hectares planted in 2023, followed by Dealu Mare subregion with 19.75 hectares. Currently, the variety is cultivated exclusively in Romania.

This grape variety has remarkable potential for producing high-quality red wines that are typically fruit-forward and intense, ideal for aging in oak barrels, a process that enhances their aromatic complexity.

Wines made from this variety stand out with a well-defined body and an intense taste, offering a rich aromatic profile featuring notes of blackberries, sour cherries, black cherries, and spices such as cloves and pepper. The acidity is typically medium, while the tannin content is usually high. The finest examples benefit from oak barrel aging and bottle maturation, further enhancing their complexity. 

In our search for the best expressions of this variety, we were particularly impressed by the wines produced by Vitis Metamorfosis and Crama Olterra, now available in Japan.
