Pinot Gris
Pinot Gris
Pinot Gris is a French grape variety that originated as a mutation of Pinot Noir.
While its origins are traced back to the Burgundy region of France, Pinot Gris is now rarely cultivated in Burgundy. Notable Pinot Gris-producing regions include Alsace in France, Baden in Germany, Friuli and Alto Adige in Italy, Oregon in the United States, and Transylvania in Romania.
This variety thrives in relatively cool climates.
In Italy, it is called Pinot Grigio; in Germany, Grauburgunder; in Hungary, Szürkebarát; in Burgundy, Pinot Beurot; and in Champagne, Fromenteau.
In Romania, when the wine is light and fresh, it is typically labeled Pinot Grigio, while fuller-bodied wines with pronounced fruit and richness are labeled Pinot Gris. This difference in labeling helps convey the style of the wine.
Wines made from Pinot Gris typically have a rich body and abundant fruit flavors. They tend to have subdued acidity, offering a smooth, full-flavored taste profile.
