Nowadays, almost every wine label in the world, except a few French wine regions, specifies the grape variety. Some well-known grape varieties for whites include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Aligote.

These are known as international grape varieties, and as the name suggests, wines of these varieties are produced in most winemaking countries.

Romania is no exception, as many international grape varieties are grown here. However, many newcomers to Romanian wines may be tempted by the novelty of indigenous grapes in step 2, and miss out on the truly awesome international varieties made here.

For now, you might want to resist the allure of indigenous grape varieties and start with international ones. If you've had similar varieties from other countries, it will be easier to recognize their flavor profile, and by comparison, you can start exploring the potential of Romania.
