Blended wines
What is a blend wine?
A wine made from a single grape variety is called a “single-variety wine,” and a wine deliberately made from a combination of two or more grape varieties is called a “blend wine.”
Blend wines are also known as mixed wines, assemblage, or coupage.
Blending grape varieties is used in all types of wines: white, rosé, red and sparkling, but it is more common in red wines.
The idea behind a blend is to achieve a certain style, improve balance, attain consistency or enhance certain aspects of the wine (color, body, tannin, acidity or aromas/flavors).
This is not an easy task, and the winemaker has to make careful decisions when it comes to blending wines.
Moreover, when it comes to blending wines from different grape varieties, different locations or different vintages, the winemaker must follow local winemaking laws and regulations.
