Tasting notes

Appearance

A bright golden yellow with subtle greenish reflections. The wine’s viscosity is evident, forming slow, generous legs that suggest both sweetness and concentration.

Nose

Generous and multi-layered, the aromas are quintessential to sweet Grasă de Cotnari. Ripe apricot, quince paste, and baked apple take center stage, supported by notes of honey, acacia blossom, and beeswax. With aeration, more delicate nuances appear: dried fig, candied citrus peel, and a gentle hint of walnut.

Palate

Lusciously sweet yet lifted by refreshing acidity, the palate reflects the nose with flavors of quince jam, apricot compote, and acacia honey. These are seamlessly woven with soft undertones of almond cream, sultanas, and light caramel, bringing both richness and finesse. The texture is silky and unctuous, finishing with persistence and leaving behind lingering impressions of honeyed stone fruit and a delicate nutty accent.

Food pairing

A classic partner to foie gras, whether terrine or seared, where the wine’s sweetness contrasts beautifully with the richness. It also shines with blue cheeses such as Roquefort, Gorgonzola, or Stilton, where salt and pungency meet honeyed apricot notes. Nut-based desserts like almond tart or walnut cake, as well as fruit pastries such as apricot galette or quince strudel, make excellent companions. In traditional Romanian cuisine, it pairs gracefully with sweet cheese pies (plăcintă cu brânză dulce) or walnut-filled cozonac. Beyond food, it is equally rewarding as a meditation wine, best savored slowly on its own.
