The grape

In Romania, alongside internationally known varieties like Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, many ancient indigenous grapes have been cultivated for centuries. Among them, Fetească Neagră is widely regarded as Romania’s flagship black grape. It thrives in both cool and warm regions and is incredibly versatile—used to produce everything from fresh, easy-drinking rosés to concentrated, full-bodied reds.

Tasting notes

Appearance

A healthy, bright ruby hue.

Nose

Rich and intense. The nose reveals ripe fruit and oak-driven aromas, creating a deep and complex aromatic profile. Expect notes of sour cherry, red plum, blackcurrant, blueberry, violet, toast, cinnamon, cloves, vanilla, licorice, tobacco leaves, and cocoa.

Palate

Exceptionally well balanced. Though dry, the wine’s moderate acidity and abundant, ripe tannins result in a soft, velvety texture. The alcohol adds body, while flavors of plum, blackcurrant, blueberry, and oak spices deliver depth. The long finish is dominated by dark fruit.

Food pairing

Perfect with grilled lamb, Japanese-style hamburg steak, oven-roasted black pork, wild boar, Transylvanian-style sarmale (rich pork cabbage rolls), and Japanese-style Genghis Khan (grilled lamb).
