The grape

In Romania, in addition to the commonly known grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, there are also many ancient indigenous grape varieties that have been cultivated for centuries. Among them, one of the most highly regarded is the Fetească Neagră variety. It is often considered the flagship black grape variety of Romania and is grown in a wide range of regions, from cool climates to warmer ones.

Fetească Neagră is a versatile grape variety that can be used to produce a variety of wines, ranging from fresh and easy-drinking rosés to concentrated and full-bodied red wines.

The "Artisan Fetească Neagră 2020" does an excellent job of capturing the true character of this grape variety. It is a must-try wine for anyone looking to explore Romania's red wine industry.

Tasting notes

  • Appearance
    Medium-intensity garnet color.
  • Nose
It has a clearly pronounced aroma of ripe black fruits and oak elements, with hints of spices and red flowers, offering a complex fragrance. It features notes of sour cherries, red plums, blackcurrants, plums, blackberry jam, violets, eucalyptus leaves, burnt wood, toast, cinnamon, leather, cloves, vanilla, licorice, tobacco leaves, forest floor, cedar, and cocoa.
  • Palate
It has a solid body and noticeable acidity, resulting in a well-structured taste. It offers ripe fruit flavors and clear oak elements, making it satisfying to drink. The tannins are abundant but starting to integrate beautifully, creating a smooth mouthfeel. The finish is marked by spicy notes from the oak, but it also retains the rich fruitiness characteristic of the grape variety. The aftertaste is elegant, reminiscent of blackberries and plums.
  • Food pairing
Grilled lamb, black pork cutlet, Transylvanian Sarmale (rich stuffed cabbage rolls with pork), Romanian-style stuffed bell peppers, Mongolian barbecue (Jingisukan), and tacos.
