About the winery

Collina Serragrilli is a family estate on a hilltop in Neive, in the heart of the Barbaresco zone. The Lequio family has farmed here for four generations, since the end of the 19th century; today Rosanna Lequio runs the estate with her husband, winemaker Piernicola Bruno.

Everything comes from their own 15 hectares around the farmhouse. The name means "the house of crickets" — serra and grilli — and the hill's clay-limestone soils, seabed some 16 million years ago, give the wines both finesse and backbone.

What is a "Super Piedmont"?

Tuscany has its Super Tuscans — ambitious wines made deliberately outside the appellation rules. This is Piedmont's answer: a blend of Barbera, Pinot Nero, Dolcetto and Freisa that fits no DOC, so it proudly goes its own way as a Vino da Tavola.

The name "Amerai" is the Italian future tense: "you shall love it." The winemaker had been saving that name for years, waiting for a blend confident enough to carry it.

Why choose this wine?

Barbera and Pinot Nero spend 12 months in French oak; Dolcetto and Freisa stay fresh in stainless steel. Blended together, they make a wine that is perfumed and generous yet completely unpretentious — serious Piedmontese winemaking in an easygoing glass.

Tasting notes

Appearance

Bright, fairly deep ruby.

Nose

Fresh floral notes from the Dolcetto and Freisa, then cherry and small red berries, with a soft touch of vanilla from the barrel-aged Barbera and Pinot Nero. It keeps shifting in the glass — half the fun.

Palate

Warm and very smooth, with soft tannins and nicely balanced acidity. Generous without being heavy, finishing on a gentle almond note.

Food pairing

Remarkably versatile: pasta bolognese, risotto, red meats and medium-hard cheeses — and it is one of those rare reds that even sits happily next to fish.
