The grape

In Romania, in addition to the commonly known grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, there are also many ancient indigenous grape varieties that have been cultivated for centuries. Among them, one of the most highly regarded is the Fetească Neagră variety. It is often considered the flagship black grape variety of Romania and is grown in a wide range of regions, from cool climates to warmer ones.

Fetească Neagră is a versatile grape variety that can be used to produce a variety of wines, ranging from fresh and easy-drinking rosés to concentrated and full-bodied red wines.

Tasting notes

  • Appearance
    A healthy, bright ruby color.
  • Nose
    The aroma is rich and intense. Ripe fruit and oak elements assert themselves clearly, providing a complex and deep aroma. Notes of sour cherry, red plum, blackcurrant, plum, blackberry, blueberry, violet, toast, cinnamon, cloves, vanilla, licorice, tobacco leaves, and cocoa are present.
  • Palate
    All elements are beautifully balanced. The sweetness is of the wine is dry, while the acidity is moderate. The tannins are abundant but well-ripened, resulting in a soft and velvety mouthfeel. The high alcohol content provides a solid body. The flavor is rich and intense, characterized by notes of plum, blackcurrant, blueberry, and oak-derived spices. The finish is long, dominated by black fruits.
  • Food pairing
    It pairs well with dishes such as grilled lamb, Japanese-style hamburg steak, oven-roasted black pork, oven-roasted wild boar, Transylvanian-style sarmale (a rich cabbage roll made with pork), and Japanese-style Genghis Khan (grilled lamb).
