What is Chardonnay?
Chardonnay, originally from Burgundy in France, is the world's best-known white grape. It faithfully reflects the place where it grows and the hand of the winemaker, ranging from fresh, unoaked dry wines to rich, creamy barrel-aged styles.
Chardonnay is grown all over Hungary, and in the warm Villány region the lime-rich loess soils give it generous fruit balanced by beautiful acidity. Vylyan's Chardonnay wears its oak lightly and elegantly, letting the Villány terroir shine through. Well worth a try.
Why choose this wine?
Made by Vylyan, one of the leading wineries of Villány in southern Hungary, Herka is a 100% Chardonnay named after the golden-haired beauty of a local folk tale; her long hair flows across the label. Vylyan named five of its wines after characters from these tales, matching each personality to the style of the wine. True to its name, Herka is fresh and gentle, with a long finish. Whole clusters were pressed and most of the juice fermented slowly in tanks at 16~20°C. About one third was then aged for 5 months in 500-liter Hungarian oak barrels with bâtonnage (lees stirring) for a creamy, flavorful texture, before being blended with the tank-fermented wine. Fresh fruit meets oak-derived creaminess in an easygoing bottle for everyday meals. Serve chilled at 8~10°C.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Bright, pale lemon yellow.
Nose
Fresh citrus and white flowers, layered with vanilla and toast from the oak.
Palate
Fresh fruit and moderate acidity in harmony, with a creamy, smooth texture from barrel aging. A light minerality carries a gentle, long finish.
Food pairing
Creamy vegetable soups, white meat and fish dishes, and grilled vegetables. Its oak-derived roundness and creamy texture gently bring out the umami of the ingredients.
