Dealu Mare Blends: A Celebration of Romanian Winemaking

A Dealu Mare blend refers to a wine crafted from grapes grown in the Dealu Mare wine region, one of Romania’s most prestigious viticultural areas. Known for its rolling hills and abundant sunshine, Dealu Mare offers ideal conditions for cultivating premium-quality grapes, particularly red varieties.

While the term "Dealu Mare Blend" has yet to receive official recognition, it is increasingly used to describe red blends that include at least 25% of the iconic Romanian grape variety, Fetească Neagră.

A unique blend of black grapes

In these blends, Fetească Neagra is often combined with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and/or Syrah. The result, in the finest examples, is a wine of exceptional balance and complexity.

The flavor profile is typically intense, featuring notes of ripe plums, sour cherries, blackberries, and spices. Oak aging often adds layers of vanilla and chocolate, while bottle aging allows these wines to develop sophisticated tertiary undertones.

A Testament to Elegance

Dealu Mare blends are celebrated for their depth, elegance, and remarkable complexity. In recent years, they have reaffirmed the outstanding potential of the Dealu Mare region, earning praise both locally and internationally.

Matei Rezerva 2019, the pinnacle of Dealu Mare Blends

One standout example is Matei Rezerva, a wine that represents the pinnacle of Dealu Mare blends. As the only Romanian blend to receive a remarkable 94 points from renowned wine critic James Suckling, Matei Rezerva exemplifies the extraordinary craftsmanship and quality that define this region.

Dealu Mare blends are more than just wines—they are a testament to Romania’s winemaking heritage and its bright future on the global stage.
