Petit Matei 2019: The Younger Brother of a Romanian Icon
Born as the younger sibling of the legendary Prince Matei Merlot Rezerva, Petit Matei 2019 carries forward the legacy of one of Romania’s most celebrated wine brands. Just as Prince Matei rose to prominence during the post-communist revival of the 1990s and came to symbolize excellence, Petit Matei was created in the same pioneering spirit—offering a more accessible, yet uncompromisingly high-quality Merlot experience.
Much like its iconic predecessor, Petit Matei is a true terroir wine. It reflects the natural harmony of its environment, drawing on the exceptional microclimates and well-balanced soils of the Grand Cru vineyards Dealu Zorilor and Dealu Tegăneanu. While the vines used for Petit Matei are younger than those of Prince Matei, they still tap into the deep, mineral-rich soils of the region—bringing freshness, vitality, and expressive fruit character to the wine.
The result is a Merlot that delivers layered aromas, vibrant energy, and impressive concentration. There’s a youthful dynamism to Petit Matei, yet it retains the complexity and elegance that mark the finest wines of Dealu Mare. It’s like a well-composed symphony—harmonious, lively, and full of promise.
Petit Matei is more than just a second label. It embodies Romanian craftsmanship, heritage, and the immense potential of its terroir. With the same commitment to quality that made Prince Matei a national benchmark, this wine is a bold statement of what Romania’s next generation of fine wine can achieve.
For those who are ready to leap into the world of Prince Matei, Petit Matei 2019 offers the perfect gateway—a glimpse into greatness.
Tasting Notes
Appearance
A deep ruby hue with a touch of violet at the rim.
Nose
The aroma is rich and layered. At its core are notes of black cherry, ripe plum, and cassis, supported by sweet spice nuances—vanilla, cedar, cinnamon, and clove—borne from barrel aging. Hints of dark chocolate and bay leaf add further depth, creating a complex and refined aromatic profile.
Palate
Dry and full-bodied, with elevated alcohol balanced by firm acidity and abundant tannins. Despite its bold structure, the wine offers a smooth, rounded texture. Concentrated flavors of ripe black fruit are beautifully intertwined with vanilla and dark chocolate, delivering both power and elegance. The palate is multilayered and impressively long, offering harmonious complexity even in its youth. That said, it also has excellent aging potential—expect even more refinement over the next 5 to 8 years.
Food Pairing
This bold and structured red pairs wonderfully with richly flavored dishes: grilled pork chops with sweet chili sauce, teppanyaki-style beef, roasted lamb, aged cheeses, and even dark chocolate-based desserts. A versatile wine that bridges savory mains and indulgent finishes.
