Romania’s Bold Interpretation of a Classic Grape

Originally from France, the black grape variety Syrah (known as Shiraz in places like Australia) has experienced a remarkable rise in Romania over the past two decades. In the early 2000s, plantings were scarce, but by 2021 the variety had expanded to more than 638 hectares and gained official recognition in 21 of Romania’s 34 DOC (Denomination of Controlled Origin) subregions. In warmer regions such as Dealu Mare, Syrah now yields deeply expressive reds, with some described as being “on another level.”

One of the most distinctive examples of Romania’s interpretation of this grape is Jidvei’s Scintti Brut Rosé Syrah. Produced as a sparkling rosé from Syrah grown in the cool climate of the Târnave subregion on the Transylvanian Plateau, it captures the variety’s elegance in an entirely new form. Crisp acidity and refined flavors highlight both the versatility of Syrah and the untapped potential of Romanian terroir, making this wine a striking showcase of innovation and character.

Why a Syrah Sparkling Wine Is Worth Exploring

While Pinot Noir is the classic choice for rosé sparkling wines, Syrah offers a fascinating twist. Renowned for its black pepper and spicy character, Syrah lends depth and personality even in sparkling form, bringing both vibrancy and complexity that set it apart from the ordinary.

This wine opens with alluring aromas of raspberry and wild rose, followed by exotic notes of red pepper and sumac. These spicy undertones, unmistakably tied to the Syrah grape, create a layered aromatic profile rarely found in traditional rosé sparklings.

Syrah also contributes naturally balanced acidity, particularly when grown in cooler climates such as Târnave, where freshness is preserved. Crafted using the Charmat method (secondary fermentation in stainless steel tanks), the wine showcases bright aromatics and a refined, delicate mousse.

The result is a sparkling rosé that combines aromatic intensity with zesty acidity, offering wine lovers a rare and distinctive style. Equally food-friendly and captivating on its own, it stands out as an exciting expression of Syrah’s versatility.

Tasting notes

Appearance

A delicate rose-pink, reminiscent of fresh petals, shimmers in the glass. Fine, graceful bubbles rise in a steady stream, creating an impression of elegance. The clarity and gentle persistence of the effervescence highlight the wine’s precision and craftsmanship.

Nose

Refined and enticing, the aromas unfold with ripe red fruits—cherries and red currants at their peak—interwoven with floral accents of wild rose and rosewater. As the wine breathes, sweet citrus emerges, giving way to subtle layers of cinnamon, red pepper, and sumac. This exotic spiciness adds intrigue and depth to the aromatic profile.

Palate

Lively and refreshing from the first sip, the fine mousse and crisp acidity carry vivid flavors of cherry and fresh strawberry. Juicy notes of watermelon and pink grapefruit add brightness and lift. With its modest 11% alcohol and harmonious interplay of fruit, acidity, and bubbles, the palate feels crisp, balanced, and thoroughly elegant.

Food pairing

Versatile and food-friendly, this sparkling rosé transitions seamlessly across a meal. Its refreshing acidity pairs beautifully with summer vegetable salads, delicate vegetable dishes, seafood including sushi and sashimi, and lean white meats such as chicken. It also complements richer fare like veal rolls in butter or cream and roasted pork shoulder.

For dessert, its lively fruit character enhances strawberry tarts or crepes topped with berry sauce. Whether poured at a festive table or enjoyed at a casual brunch, this sparkling rosé proves itself a charming, all-purpose companion—graceful, expressive, and endlessly versatile.
