What is Csókaszőlő?

Csókaszőlő is a true rarity: an ancient Hungarian red variety that was widely planted across the Carpathian Basin centuries ago, then all but wiped out by phylloxera at the end of the 19th century. The variety survived only in the gene bank of the Pécs wine research institute.

In 2004, the Vylyan winery joined forces with the institute to bring this near-extinct grape back to life, and today some 4,000 Csókaszőlő vines grow in their vineyards. The small, dark berries were once nicknamed after the blackbird — which is why a little black bird graces the label of this wine.

About Vylyan

Founded in 1992 in Hungary’s southernmost wine region, Villány, Vylyan takes its name from a medieval spelling of the area found in old documents. With around 120 hectares of vineyards and some 600,000 bottles per year, the winery earned international acclaim early on — a Decanter award for its 2004 Pinot Noir, and the title of Hungarian “Winery of the Year” in 2008. Vylyan has always championed the elegant, balanced side of Villány reds.

Why choose this wine?

Csóka 2019 captures the beauty of an outstanding Villány vintage with a truly unique character. Dried cherry and rosehip fruit meets cool, forest-like nuances, while silky acidity and velvety tannins are reminiscent of Burgundy. A medium-bodied, wonderfully drinkable bistro red — awarded a gold medal at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge 2024 — made from a grape you will simply not find outside Hungary. A rare bottle worth discovering.

Tasting notes

Appearance

Bright, healthy, light ruby hue.

Nose

Medium-intensity aromas of sour cherry, dried cherry and rosehip, lifted by licorice and a cool, forest-floor spiciness. Oak stays discreetly in the background, letting the variety speak.

Palate

Medium-bodied, with fresh, lively acidity and soft, velvety tannins in beautiful balance. Juicy dried-cherry and rosehip fruit fills the palate, closing on a gently spicy finish. The silky texture recalls a fine Burgundy.

Food pairing

A versatile companion for lighter meat dishes: roast duck, lamb chops, roast chicken, pasta with meat sauce, or semi-hard cheeses. It also works beautifully with Japanese dishes such as yakitori with tare sauce, duck nanban soba, or sukiyaki.
