What is Mavrud?
Mavrud is Bulgaria’s flagship black grape variety and is known as one of the most promising indigenous varieties. It is cultivated in Bulgaria, Greece, Albania, and Romania.
The wine is characterized by blackberry and plum aromas, balanced tannins, and acidity. It is well-suited for barrel aging and pairs beautifully with rich dishes, shabu-shabu beef, duck in orange sauce, wine-braised duck, and other meat-based dishes.
Tasting Notes
Appearance
Deep garnet color.
Nose
Rich and complex aromas of cherry, sour cherry, and plum, with hints of nuts, smoke, and vanilla from barrel aging.
Palate
Ripe black fruits (blackberries and blackcurrants) are harmoniously blended with spices and soft tannins from the barrel aging.
Food Pairing
This wine pairs exceptionally well with hearty meat dishes such as beef and game, as well as blue cheese or dishes featuring orange marmalade.
