About Chizay

Chateau Chizay is one of Ukraine's most important wineries. It sits in the Chizay valley near the town of Berehove, in Zakarpattia (Transcarpathia), Ukraine's westernmost region, just a few kilometers from the Hungarian border. Founded in 1995, the estate farms around 272 hectares of its own vineyards on the volcanic foothills of the Carpathians.

Over the centuries, this corner of Europe has belonged to many different states, and its wine culture carries Hungarian, Slovak, Italian and Austrian influences. Chizay respects these traditions while embracing modern technology and a sustainable approach to winemaking.

Why choose this wine?

Grown on the hills of Zakarpattia near the Hungarian border, this Merlot was fermented in stainless steel tanks and then aged for 9 months in oak barrels. Generous forest fruit and dark cherry flavors meet warm hints of clove and nutmeg, while fine-grained tannins and clean acidity keep it elegant and easy to enjoy. It is a great match for yakiniku, hamburg steak and other everyday meat dishes, and a rare chance to discover what Ukrainian wine can do.

Tasting notes

Appearance

Bright, clear ruby.

Nose

A pleasant, fruit-driven nose of forest fruits, dark cherries and sour cherry jam, lifted by spicy notes of clove and nutmeg.

Palate

Fruit-forward and firmly supported by clean, fresh acidity. Fine-grained tannins give the wine a sense of elegance, with flavors of plum and dark cherry.

Food pairing

Yakiniku (Japanese grilled meat) and hamburg steak.
