About the winery
This wine comes from Casa de Vinuri Cotnari, founded in 2007 by the younger generation of the historic Cotnari winery's families. Their promise is rare even in Romania: wine made exclusively from native Romanian varieties. Of their 350 hectares, 50 are given to Feteasca Alba, farmed with deliberately low yields.
Their emblem is Vlădoianu Castle, built in 1901. The "Domenii" line — fully ripened harvest (CMD) wines from native grapes — has long been the house's restaurant-and-specialist favourite.
What is Cotnari?
Cotnari, in the hills of northeastern Romania's Moldova region, is the country's most storied white wine appellation — first documented in 1448. Stephen the Great (r. 1457–1504) expanded these vineyards, and their wines graced the princely court. At the 1889 Paris World's Fair, Cotnari took the Grand Prix and made its name across Europe.
A cool climate and chernozem (black earth) soils give the whites here their perfume and beautiful acidity.
Feteasca Alba from Cotnari's standout 2024 harvest
Feteasca Alba is one of Romania's oldest native white grapes — acacia and jasmine blossom on the nose, green apple on the palate. And 2024 was called Cotnari's best year in the better part of a decade: rain and sun arrived at exactly the right moments, delivering healthy, beautifully ripe fruit.
The Domenii Feteasca Alba line has Gold medals from Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2020 and Vinarium 2019. At a light 11.19%, it is the kind of white that slips quietly into everyday dinners.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Pale yellow — crystalline, with a delicate shine.
Nose
White blossom first — acacia and jasmine — then green apple, pear and a whisper of tropical fruit. Like breathing in a spring meadow.
Palate
Fresh acidity arrives first, then the six months on fine lees show themselves: a soft, rounded texture wrapping the fruit, with a gentle hint of honey underneath. Citrus freshness lingers on the finish. Light, dry, and never tiring.
Food pairing
Grilled white fish, carpaccio, chicken dishes, creamy pasta. The gentle acidity makes it a natural with Japanese food — sushi, tempura, hiyayakko — and a lovely aperitif besides.
