The grape

In Romania, in addition to the commonly known grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, there are also many ancient indigenous grape varieties that have been cultivated for centuries. Among them, one of the most highly regarded is the Fetească Neagră variety. It is often considered the flagship black grape variety of Romania and is grown in a wide range of regions, from cool climates to warmer ones.

Fetească Neagră is a versatile grape variety that can be used to produce a variety of wines, ranging from fresh and easy-drinking rosés to concentrated and full-bodied red wines.

Tasting notes

  • Appearance
    Ruby color, tinged with purple.
  • Nose
    The aroma is intense, predominantly featuring black fruits. It presents aromas of ripe blackberry, blackcurrant, and prune, with nuances of spices (black pepper, nutmeg, cloves), coffee, licorice, and vanilla. There is a slight hint of violet-like nuances as well.
  • Palate
    While rounded, it remains bold, with mouth-watering acidity and firm tannins. It's dry, with a high alcohol content. It has a solid structure and is full-bodied. It gives the impression of ripe black fruits or jam, resulting in a satisfying wine. The finish is long. Still developing, it will gain finesse if aged for 5 to 7 years.
  • Food pairing
    It pairs well with dishes such as red meat steak, roasted lamb, Genghis Khan (grilled lamb), and pasta with meat sauce.

  • Serving temperature: 16~18℃
  • Decanting can mellow out the taste of the wine and open up its aromas. The recommended time from decanting to serving the wine is about 1 hour.
