About the winery

Gabriele Gaffino is a three-generation family winery in Ardea, a few kilometres south of Rome, looking out over the Tyrrhenian Sea. The estate covers 32 hectares, 28 of them vineyards, farmed organically on volcanic-clay soils at 150 m.

Only the varieties best suited to this land are planted; grapes are selected on the vine, harvested at the right moment, and vinified variety by variety.

What is Roma DOC?

Roma DOC is one of Italy's youngest appellations, approved in 2011 for vineyards around the Eternal City — a proud attempt to bring Rome's 2,000-year wine culture back to the modern table.

The lead grape is Montepulciano, central Italy's great black variety — famously not to be confused with the Tuscan town of the same name. Here it joins hands with Sangiovese.

Robert Parker 92 — a wine worthy of the name "Roma"

Half the wine matures 12 months in new barrels, half stays in stainless steel — a balance of power and freshness. Robert Parker gave it 92 points; it also holds Gold from Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, Berliner Wine Trophy and Mundus Vini.

The producer's word for it is "harmonious": a full-bodied red where strength and elegance live together. One for the special occasions.

Tasting notes

Appearance

Deep, concentrated ruby.

Nose

A complex, generous bouquet: ripe dark fruit layered with the toasty warmth of oak, unfolding slowly in the glass.

Palate

Full-bodied and satisfying, yet the tannins are silky-smooth. Beneath the soft, round entry, power and elegance quietly assert themselves. The finish is long and clean.

Food pairing

Pasta with meat sauce, roasts and braised meats, semi-aged to aged cheeses. Also wonderful with sukiyaki or beef stew — anything rich and slow-cooked.
