The pride of Villány: Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Franc truly comes into its own in Villány, in southern Hungary. Blessed with a warm continental climate and limestone soils, this celebrated region treats Cabernet Franc not as a blending partner but as the star of the show. Under the "Villányi Franc" appellation it is bottled as a premium 100% Cabernet Franc that has become the flagship of the region — a powerful yet elegant red in which ripe fruit, generous spice and refined tannins meet in harmony.

"Instead of a honeymoon" — the Ipacs Szabó story

"Nászút helyett" means "instead of a honeymoon" in Hungarian. The name comes from a family story: winemaker István Ipacs Szabó bought this small vineyard with the money he had set aside for his honeymoon. It was, in his own words, love at first sight. He tends just 1.5 hectares entirely by hand, using no heavy machinery and farming organically, with an uncompromising focus on quality over quantity. This wine is, quite literally, a labour of love.

Why choose this wine?

If Ipacs Szabó's "Inni jó" is the embodiment of fruitiness, "Nászút helyett" is the estate's flagship expression of elegance and harmony, shaped by careful barrel ageing. The 2020 vintage was selected among the "Top 12 Villányi Franc" wines chosen each year by the region's winemakers in a blind tasting — a mark of real pedigree. Concentrated fruit, velvety tannins and a long, lingering finish make it a moving choice for a special occasion.

Tasting notes

Appearance

Deep, bright garnet.

Nose

Ripe red and black fruit — black cherry, blackcurrant, blackberry and plum — layered with dried fruit and fig, tobacco, cedar, spice, dark chocolate, leather and oak-derived notes of roast and vanilla. Concentrated, yet defined by an integrated complexity and harmony.

Palate

Dry, with lively acidity that keeps everything fresh and velvety, ample tannins forming the backbone. Concentrated fruit melds with savoury oak into a powerful yet smooth whole, closing on a long, memorable finish. Medium (+) body.

Food pairing

A beautiful match for grilled or roasted beef and lamb, steak, red-wine braises, game dishes and aged cheeses. Among Japanese dishes it works well with sukiyaki, roast duck and richer miso- or soy-based meat preparations.
