About the winery

Ornella Bellia is a family winery in Pramaggiore, Veneto. Grandfather Aurelio started in 1951 as a tenant farmer with 18 hectares; today the third generation, Ornella herself, looks after more than 33 hectares of estate vineyards. "Producing wine," she says, "means undertaking a lifelong project for ourselves and our children."

The vineyards lie on the plain between the Livenza and Tagliamento rivers, where a layer of limestone called caranto sleeps beneath the clay topsoil — the very same formation that holds up the foundations of Venice. Adriatic breezes bring wide day-night temperature swings, and aromatic grapes.

What is Tai?

Tai is the Veneto's name for the grape once called Tocai. After the 2007 naming dispute with Hungary's Tokaj, the Veneto affectionately renamed it "Tai" — and in the region's osterie it remains the house pour of house pours.

IGT Trevenezie is the umbrella designation spanning Veneto, Friuli and Trentino — the "three Venices" of the old Venetian Republic.

The Veneto's everyday glass, for your table

In the trattorie of the Veneto and Friuli, Tai is poured as naturally as water — aperitif, lunch, dinner. An honest price, serious winemaking. If you are looking for a white to keep on the table every day and never tire of, this is it.

Tasting notes

Appearance

Bright straw yellow with greenish highlights.

Nose

White flowers and fruit, with Tai's trademark bitter-almond nuance behind. Understated but expressive — an appetite-whetting nose.

Palate

Fresh fruit and gentle acidity in easy balance, with a soft bitter-almond note surfacing on the finish. It slips down and calls for another glass — the definition of an everyday dry white.

Food pairing

Starters, soups and pasta, seafood, soft cheeses. Very good with boiled meats — and it settles in naturally next to sushi or tempura.
