What is Gitana Winery?
Gitana Winery is a family estate in southern Moldova whose story began in 1953 in the village of Plopi. Since 1999 the Dulgher family has rebuilt it from the ground up, planting their own vineyards in Romanovca and Filipeni in the Valul lui Traian region and putting quality firmly before quantity. Italian winemaker Nicola Tucci now leads the cellar, blending tradition with modern technique.
Cabernet meets the native Rara Neagra
This is a very Gitana kind of red: world-famous Cabernet Sauvignon backed by 20% Rara Neagra, a native grape that has grown on this land for centuries. Rara Neagra brings gentle fruit and a supple, silky feel that softens Cabernet's firm frame. Fermentation happens in large open oak vats, then the wine rests in stainless steel to keep its freshness. Try it against its white sibling, the Portret Chardonnay Feteasca Regala.
Why choose this wine?
Plum and chocolate on the nose, comfortable body on the palate, and no fuss at all. Open it on yakiniku night, with burgers, or whenever you feel like exploring Moldova's native grapes without committing to a big cellar wine.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Deep ruby red with purple glints when you tilt the glass.
Nose
Ripe plum and blackberry lead, wrapped in a sweet chocolate note. Give it a little air and quiet spice and vanilla appear, so the glass keeps evolving through the meal.
Palate
Ripe dark fruit spreads generously across the palate. Cabernet provides the backbone while Rara Neagra rounds the edges, leaving the tannins smooth and friendly. A subtle spiciness from the oak vat fermentation keeps everything tidy, and a cocoa-like bitterness lingers pleasantly on the finish.
Food pairing
Excellent with yakiniku, hamburger steak and pasta with meat sauce. It also loves sweet-savory Japanese dishes like teriyaki chicken or braised pork belly, and semi-hard cheeses.
