About the winery

Vie d'Alt is a family winery in Prepotto, in the Friulian hills near the Slovenian border. Great-grandfather Antonio Venica bought the first vineyard — "Vie d'Alt", the Upper Way — back in 1915, and four generations later the estate is run by three sisters of the Venica family.

Their 18 hectares of terraced vineyards (roncs, in Friulian) curve around the valley like an amphitheatre. Everything is picked by hand, herbicides are out, and solar panels power the cellar. This Friulano's 2025 vintage won Gold at Mundus Vini 2026.

What is Friulano?

Friulano is Friuli's signature white grape, long known as "Tocai". After a naming dispute with Hungary's Tokaj region, Italian producers had to give up the old name in 2007 — and Friuli proudly renamed the grape after itself.

The soil here is ponca: alternating layers of marl and sandstone, an ancient seabed lifted into hills some 50 million years ago. It gives the grape its perfume and its lovely acidity.

A white that seems born for prosciutto

Locals will tell you Friulano is the prosciutto wine, and San Daniele — home of Italy's silkiest cured ham — is just 40 km away. That pairing alone is worth the bottle, but it is equally at home with appetizers, white meats and lighter Japanese dishes.

Tasting notes

Appearance

Brilliant straw yellow.

Nose

A graceful, fruity bouquet — white flowers, citrus and white peach, unfolding gently in the glass.

Palate

Plush and rounded on entry, held together by beautiful mineral acidity. The finish carries Friulano's trademark whisper of bitter almond — quiet, moreish, never tiring.

Food pairing

Prosciutto crudo (San Daniele above all) is the classic match. Also lovely as an aperitif, with white meat, light starters and fresh cheeses.
