Mavrud, a Bulgarian treasure
Mavrud is the flagship indigenous red grape of Bulgaria's Thracian region. Grown mainly around Asenovgrad and Perushtitsa, it makes structured red wines with a powerful frame, generous spice and firm tannins. Blackberry, blackcurrant and rosehip meet spice and fresh acidity in this characterful Bulgarian variety.
Made by the "Amarone method"
This wine is made by the luxurious appassimento or "Amarone method": the harvested Mavrud grapes are air-dried for two to three months to concentrate their sugar and extract before fermentation. Malolactic conversion and 15 months of ageing in new Bulgarian oak barriques follow, producing a wine of concentrated fruit, remarkable depth and commanding presence, a truly grand full-bodied red. It is also EU-certified organic.
Zagreus Winery
Zagreus, based in the village of Popovitsa in the Thracian Lowland, is a producer devoted to Mavrud and other indigenous Bulgarian varieties. Committed to organic viticulture, it crafts wines that express the character of this land to the full.
Why choose this wine?
The dense, concentrated fruit and refined complexity that only dried-grape Mavrud can offer: cherry and plum, dried fruit, licorice and spice, with a long finish recalling dark chocolate. A treasure of Bulgaria for a special moment or a meal with loved ones. Enjoy it slowly, alongside a hearty meat dish.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Opaque, deep garnet.
Nose
Cherry and plum lead, layered with dried fruit, dried tea leaves, licorice and spice in an aristocratic, multi-layered profile.
Palate
A dense, concentrated structure with grainy, powerful tannins and well-integrated acidity, closing on a long finish touched by dark chocolate. Deep and stately, with all the presence of the dried-grape method. A grand full-bodied red.
Food pairing
A beautiful match for grilled or roasted beef and lamb, red-wine braises, game dishes and aged cheeses. Among Japanese dishes it also pairs well with sukiyaki and richer miso- or soy-based meat preparations.
