The grape
Sauvignon Blanc is a highly popular grape variety in Romania, with a total cultivation area of 5,614 hectares, surpassing Chardonnay and accounting for about 4.5% of the world's Sauvignon Blanc production.
Romania has a rich culture of Sauvignon Blanc and produces various styles of this grape variety. From crisp styles perfect for summer to full-bodied styles fermented with wild yeast, there's a wide range of expressions to enjoy.
The [Caii de la Letea Princeps Reserva Sauvignon Blanc Acacia 2021] is particularly distinctive. Aged in acacia wood barrels, it exudes an elegant aroma reminiscent of acacia honey.
Tasting notes
- Appearance
A healthy, radiant medium lemon color with golden hues. - Nose
The aroma is rich and intense, striking an excellent balance between the grape variety's character and the aroma imparted by aging in acacia barrels. It is so harmonious that it makes me think of a top-tier orchestra. It shows nuances of citrus fruits (lemon, lime, grapefruit), herbs, tropical fruits (pineapple), and flowers (elderflower, honeysuckle), along with terroir-derived mineral notes, complemented by nuances of acacia honey, vanilla, and coconut from the acacia wood barrels. At the same time, the barrel aromas are prominent but do not overshadow the grape character. The wine shows complexity and finesse. - Palate
It is dry, with firm acidity and a moderate alcohol content. The flavor is strong and very rich. Due to bâtonnage, the taste is more complex, with a smooth mouthfeel. It has a creamy texture and a solid body. The finish is long. - Food pairing
It pairs well with clam chowder, marinated octopus, tender squid, creamy mushroom pasta, butter-seared salmon, and smoked salmon.
