It is characterized by aromas reminiscent of prunes, blackberries, and cocoa. It usually has rich tannins but a smooth and soft mouthfeel.

It produces wines with a wide range of drinking profiles, from refreshing rosés, balanced medium-bodied wines to full-bodied examples. Many Fetească Neagră wines are suitable for long-term aging.
