About the winery

Gabriele Gaffino is a three-generation family winery in Ardea, a few kilometres south of Rome, looking out over the Tyrrhenian Sea. The estate covers 32 hectares, 28 of them vineyards, farmed organically on volcanic-clay soils at 150 m.

Only the varieties best suited to this climate and soil are planted; grapes are selected on the vine and picked at just the right moment, then vinified variety by variety — so the wine needs no tricks in the cellar.

What is a fojetta?

The fojetta was a wine measure — about half a litre — fixed by decree of Pope Sixtus V. In the old osterie of Rome, wine was ordered by the fojetta. The name is a toast to the Roman way of drinking.

The grape is Viognier, the variety of the Rhône's famous Condrieu — still a rarity in Lazio. Meeting volcanic soil here, it picks up a mineral edge underneath its trademark opulence.

Robert Parker 89 points — a white that makes you sigh

To capture the aromas, the grapes get 48 hours of cold skin contact at 8°C, then a slow 12-day fermentation at 12°C. The producer's one-word description: "seductive." Robert Parker 89, James Suckling 88, Mundus Vini Gold — and fittingly, "fojetta" also sounds like a little sigh.

Tasting notes

Appearance

Bright, luminous golden yellow.

Nose

Apricot leads, wrapped in white flowers and white peach. Viognier's glossy perfume, with a mineral undertone from the volcanic soil.

Palate

Generous fruit carried by beautifully integrated acidity. Fresh yet rounded, with the flavour lingering long after the sip. A confident recommendation both for Viognier lovers and first-timers.

Food pairing

Chicken dishes, grilled sea bass, semi-aged cheeses. Excellent with oysters and mussels too — and with Japanese food, try chicken teriyaki or tempura.
