What is Gitana Winery?
Gitana Winery is a family estate in Moldova's southern Valul lui Traian region, with roots going back to 1953 in the village of Plopi. The Dulgher family revived it in 1999, pairing traditional large-vat fermentation with modern cellar technology, and Italian winemaker Nicola Tucci now signs the wines. Their devotion to native grapes runs deep, and this Rara Neagra is its clearest expression.
What is Rara Neagra?
Rara Neagra, literally "the rare black one", is one of Moldova's oldest native red varieties, known across the border in Romania as Babeasca Neagra. It has fed this region's tables for centuries. The color is relatively pale and the style delicate and silky, which is why it is often compared to Pinot Noir. Here the grapes ferment naturally in large oak vats, go through malolactic conversion in wood, rest two years on fine lees and mature two years in oak barrels. All that patience gives the variety's natural finesse a lovely roundness and depth.
Why choose this wine?
This is not a wine that shouts; it wins you over with perfumed detail and a silky feel. Rara Neagra is still almost impossible to find in Japan, so it makes a great conversation bottle for a table of wine lovers. If you enjoy it, work your way to the blend in the Portret Cabernet Sauvignon Rara Neagra.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Ruby red with garnet tones, on the paler side, as the variety should be.
Nose
Raspberry and strawberry lead, followed by dried fruit, gentle spice, and the vanilla and creamy notes that come from long barrel ageing. The bouquet keeps unfolding as the wine breathes.
Palate
Remarkably silky. Two years in barrel have polished the tannins smooth, red fruit and dried-fruit flavors spread calmly, and mellow acidity holds it all together. Not a powerful wine but a deeply savory one, with a long cherry-toned finish.
Food pairing
Lovely with roast chicken, teriyaki chicken, roast pork and sautéed mushrooms. It also sits happily next to dashi-driven Japanese dishes and medium-strength cheeses. Pinot Noir drinkers, this one is for you.
